- Notes: Prudence Johnson has been called “a national treasure” by Pulse!, “a class act” by Cadence, the national jazz review, and “a true artist hitting her timeless stride” by Jim Walsh of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Dean Magraw is one of the true guitar phenoms to arise out of the Minnesota’s rich music scene. “He can bend, tap, pluck and pick with the best of them, but he’s more concerned with making the instrument swoop and glide above a varied terrain of styles and influence… Impossible to pigeonhole, and impossible to ignore, Magraw deserves to stand amongst the ranks of John Renbourne, Leo Kottke, and Michael Hedges, A class act.” Dirty Linen Michelle Kinney is the go-to cellist for many in the Minnesota and national music scenes. Michelle is a founding member of Jelloslave and has recorded, performed and toured throughout Europe and the U.S. with some of the most respected innovators in new music today: Henry Threadgill, Butch Morris, Myra Melford, George Cartwright, Steven Bernstein and Steve Tibbets. Michelle has also worked on many recordings and live appearances with artists such as Natalie Merchant, Sheryl Crow, Hal Wilner, Lou Reed, John Cale, and Richie Havens. The concert at Hope will be a reprise of the show performed this past spring at the Open Eye Theatre. The trio went to the 17th-19th centuries in search of little gems of songs that provide windows into peoples’ lives: the story of the young mother whose husband goes off to war, the Appalachian girl who wishes she were single again, a lady of means who runs off with a gypsy, Sweet Betsy from Pike! Funny, tragic…and beautifully played by Dean and Michelle, who also join in with three part harmony for portions of the show.
